6th March 2010 - The We-Waste Room as part of the Market Estate Project

The "We-Waste Room" is a visual and sound installation. A performance, emanating from the materials the previous residents disposed of, questions their relationship with their waste and the demise of the building itself.

The “We-Waste Room” is the home of a fully grown human being, a fictional character born surrounded by all the waste of the previous inhabitants of the Market Estate flats. Throughout all these years, dealing with all kinds of rubbish disposed of by the block’s residents, from organic and chemical, to unwanted furniture, used nappies and syringes, this character has seen it all.

Hundreds of lives passed him by in this block of flats, and this character has played a part in all of them; their habits, their stories were intrinsic in this lonely creature's life. None of these residents ever once acknowledged his existence.

The “We-Waste Room” is the last chance for people to finally get to know this character’s story and how he managed to survive all these years in the worst of conditions.

The performance will describe the day to day existence of this character, from his waking moment until the end of his journey.

His relationship with all these peoples' waste, dictated by impulses of survival, loneliness, apathy and alienation, provide the dramatic progress of his actions.

The audience will be able to intimately observe his every move, interacting with all the elements around him.

Anyone in the audience who was once a resident will have to acknowledge that this creature knows them really well, their habits, their hidden secrets, their life style…will they be scared? feel pity? guilt?

His journey will end when he realizes that the building is about to be demolished and “the last survivor” will become homeless himself.

The realisation of the “We-Waste Room” could not be possible without the help and professional expertise of Mark Bramfitt, Rosie Goodwin, Miwa Mitsuhashi, Rosiris Garrido and Faycal Mihoubi, supporters and friends of the We-Waste Project.

7th July to 1st August 2010 - The We-Waste Room Costume Exhibition

This exhibition has been commissioned by Susan Segal to be part of the Riverhouse Barn Art Gallery’s July programme.

In this exhibition, designer Mauricio Carneiro and artist Beo da Silva bring to the attention of the public the process of creating a finished costume, in the context of a new show!

From their initial sources of inspiration and their sketches, demonstrating the techniques used and the development of their ideas, Mauricio and Beo intend to bring to life the universe of characters that live in a landfill site. Surrounded by all the waste of our society these characters fight for their survival amongst the lowest level of existence, provoking questions of our relationship with consumerism, poverty, fashion, and recycling.

The exhibition itself will consist of recreating the environment of a ‘We-Waste Room’. It will be presented as a visual and sound installation enclosed in semi-darkness but highlighted with dramatic and expressive lighting.
